Hi Marc, the inconsistent vehicle data is indeed the hardest part. You can't really trust anything other than the VIN. I ended up building a custom VIN decoder around the NHTSAs public one, once we decode the VIN to make, model, year, and ideally trim / series we can use other datasets and query on the make model year and trim if we have. Going forward I think synthetic datasets will play a huge role, the key is keeping them focused on a specific niche for easy validation. Happy to chat more if you're interested.
